Sugar’s Terrible History – Alarming To This Day – Not Really Innocent. Find Out

I have known about Cane Sugar / Crystalised Sugar / Table Sugar for many years - how it started.

Word of Caution: Your liver converts excess sugar into body fat, but your brain responds to excess sugar by shutting down its energy supply. Alzheimer's is not just a disease of memory; it is a disease of sugar-induced brain starvation.

Section 1: Born in the Pharmacy (The Apothecary Era)

Long before sugar became a cheap supermarket commodity, it was treated as a rare, exotic chemical compound. In medieval and Renaissance Europe, sugar was controlled almost exclusively by apothecaries (the historical name for pharmacists).

Because it was imported at great expense from distant lands,
it was locked away in specialized medicine chests alongside opium, mercury, and arsenic.

Pharmacists primarily used sugar for two reasons:

  1. Masking Toxic and Bitter Chemicals: Early medicines were notoriously foul-tasting, made from bitter roots, crushed bugs, and raw minerals. Apothecaries discovered that sugar’s extreme sweetness could fool the human palate, allowing patients to swallow otherwise unpalatable remedies. 
  2. The Illusion of "Vitality": When sick patients consumed sugar-coated medicine, the sudden rush of glucose into their bloodstream gave them an immediate, temporary burst of energy. Pharmacists mistook this short-term artificial high for genuine healing properties. As a result, sugar was actively prescribed as a treatment for physical lethargy, stomach ailments, and even deep depression.

Realizing how incredibly profitable the desire for this sweetness was, apothecaries began mixing sugar with rosewater, starches, and essential oils to create non-medicinal, solid lozenges. Over the decades, demand grew so fierce that production migrated out of the pharmacies entirely. By the late 1700s, the world's first independent confectionery shops opened their doors, transforming a prescription drug into a daily indulgence.


Section 3: The Visible Physical Transformation of the 1800s

By the mid-19th century, the expansion of industrial sugar mills caused the price of sugar to plummet. For the first time in human history, refined sucrose became cheaper than real food. In the rapidly growing factory towns of the Industrial Revolution, impoverished families began relying on cheap "boiled sweets" (hard candies) to suppress their hunger during grueling 14-hour work shifts.

The physical impact on the population was immediate and highly visible:

  • The Dental Carey Epidemic: Prior to this era, severe dental caries was uncommon among the working class. The sudden, daily exposure to sticky, boiled sucrose caused a rampant epidemic of dental rot. Because modern dentistry did not exist, millions lived with constant, untreated oral infections that drained their physical vitality and compromised their immune systems.
  • Accelerated Aging (The Glycation Process): Heavy sugar consumption triggered a physical reaction known as Glycation. In simple terms, excess sugar molecules floating in the bloodstream attached themselves to the body's natural collagen and Elastin fibers. This caused the cellular structure of the skin to become brittle and stiff, leading to premature deep wrinkling and a pale, sallow complexion in remarkably young workers.
  • Nutritional Deprivation: Because cheap candies were used as a low-cost substitute for proper meals, an entire generation of children grew up deprived of essential proteins and healthy fats.

This led to severe nutritional deficiencies, resulting in stunted physical growth and weakened bone structures across industrial towns. 


Section 4: The 19th-Century Candy Scandals (The Poisoned Palette)

As confectionery shops multiplied, competition became fierce. To attract the attention of children and shoppers, manufacturers wanted their boiled sweets to look as bright, vibrant, and appealing as possible in shop windows. However, because there were absolutely no food safety laws or regulatory agencies at the time, factory owners resorted to using cheap, industrial paint pigments to color their products. 

The substances they intentionally mixed into children's treats are deeply disturbing:

  • Green Sweets: Achieved by adding copper sulfate or copper arsenite (commonly known as arsenic).
  • Yellow and Orange Sweets: Colored using lead chromate, a highly toxic industrial pigment.
  • Red Sweets: Tinted using mercury sulfide (vermilion) or red lead oxide. 

The manufacturers were fully aware that these chemicals were used to kill pests or tint industrial paints, yet they systematically poured them into confectionery vats. Consumers eating these sweets daily suffered from chronic, low-dose heavy metal poisoning.

Because the medical community of the 1800s did not understand chemical toxicity, they could not diagnose what was happening. Lead, mercury, and arsenic directly attack the human central nervous system, causing severe neurological damage. Victims suffered from extreme spatial confusion, sudden violent mood swings, intense paranoia, and hallucinations. Thousands of people whose brains were simply being poisoned by corporate food manufacturers were wrongfully declared "mad" and institutionalized in historical asylums. 


Section 5: The Modern "Sugar Blues" (Mood, Confusion, and Memory Blanks)

While we no longer paint our confectionery with arsenic or lead, modern consumers are still being severely affected by a different kind of biological manipulation. The term "Sugar Blues" perfectly describes the hidden neurological fallout of today's high-sugar diet. When a person consumes processed white, raw, or brown sugar, it doesn’t just impact their waistline; it acts as an immediate disruptor to the delicate chemical balance of the brain.

The connection between refined sugar and modern psychological struggles comes down to three major biochemical reactions:

  • The Anger, Irritability, and Fuse-Blowing Cycle: Your brain requires a steady, predictable supply of glucose to function calmly. When you consume refined sugar, your blood glucose spikes violently, forcing your pancreas to dump a massive wave of insulin into your system to clear it out. This triggers a "reactive hypoglycemic crash"—a sudden drop in blood sugar that deprives the brain of fuel. In response, your brain perceives a state of emergency and floods your body with stress hormones like adrenaline and cortisol. This hormonal surge causes immediate irritability, nerves on edge, unprovoked anger issues, and explosive mood swings.
  • Acute Sensitivity and Spatial Confusion: During a sugar crash, the brain struggles to process external sensory data efficiently. This leads to a state of intense brain fog and spatial confusion. Everyday stressors feel magnified, leaving the individual feeling hyper-sensitive to loud noises, bright lights, and demanding tasks. The person isn't simply having a "bad day"—their brain is experiencing an acute energy deficit.
  • Memory Blanks and Concentration Lapses: High sugar intake temporarily paralyzes the brain’s ability to communicate internally. When insulin levels spike repeatedly, it disrupts the action of Acetylcholine, the primary neurotransmitter responsible for focus, learning, and working memory. This is why heavy sugar consumers frequently experience sudden memory blanks, difficulty in concentration, or find themselves staring blankly at a screen, completely unable to process basic information.

What the food industry markets as a comforting, sweet reward is actually a direct trigger for cognitive decline and emotional instability.
